Distance Learning Networks and Partnerships

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation... Trans Pacific Internet University
The APEC Education Network is an Internet-based interactive network linking scholars, students, scientists, business leaders and policy makers. Its primary purpose is to facilitate research, collaboration and educational exchange regarding the critical economic, political, health care, resource management and scientific policy issues in the world's most rapidly developing region.

Indiana - Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System
IHETS is a unique state-funded consortium of all 39 public and private universities and colleges (77 campus sites), created by legislation of the Indiana General Assembly in 1967. They are also a facilitator of the Indiana Partnership for Statewide Education, an effort in which Indiana's independent and public postsecondary institutions join to coordinate distance education statewide.

Maine - The Maine Telecommunications and Information Technology Planning Project
The Maine Telecommunications and Information Technology Planning Project is funded, in part, by a planning grant from the Telecommunications and Information Infrastructure Assistance Program, National Telecommunications and Information Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, and through matching funds provided by the Education Network of Maine, an institution of the University of Maine System, and the Maine Public Broadcasting Corporation. The Project's objective is to, "develop a strategic planning capacity-- The Maine Project-- to address the state's telecommunications and information infrastructure needs comprehensively and for the long term."

Maine - The University of Maine System Network for Education and Technology Services
A service of the University of Maine System, the University of Maine System Network for Education and Technology Services (UNET) provides statewide access to education, training and support services via interactive technology and consolidated and off-campus services.

Midwestern Higher Education Consortium (MHEC)
Established in 1991 as an interstate compact agency, the Midwestern Higher Education Commission (MHEC) is charged with promoting interstate cooperation and resource sharing in higher education. As of March 1997, the member states of MHEC are Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Wisconsin.  MHEC is just beginning its own telecommunications cooperative, the Midwestern Technology in Education Cooperative. View their proposal for developing a cooperative that will include K-12 partners.

Nebraska - Nebraska Educational Telecommunication Network
This site should enable teachers and students to easily identify and obtain Web resources for Internet and electronic information training in support of distance education.

Ohio - The Ohio Learning Network
The Ohio Learning Network is an initiative of the Ohio Board of Regents. The OLN serves as a clearinghouse of distance learning information from Ohio's colleges and universities. OLN seeks to raise the overall educational attainment for all Ohioans by: expanding access to learning opportunities; assisting colleges and university in their capacity and effectiveness to use technology in instruction; supporting leading-edge activities; and facilitating partnerships and collaborations among higher education, schools, business and industry, and local communities. OLN works to reduce the Ohio education deficit through its projects and programs by providing 1) access to e-learning and services supporting e-learners, 2) continuous policy improvements, and 3) professional development to faculty.


Oklahoma - OneNet, Oklahoma Telecommunications Infrastructure
The official telecommunications and information network for Oklahoma education and government. OneNet electronically links public schools, vocational-technical schools, colleges and universities, courts, libraries and local, county, state, tribal and federal government agencies across the state.

Oregon - COMPASS (Part of the Oregon ED-NET)
COMPASS is Oregon's only statewide public online network and Internet gateway. The COMPASS network provides access to information, educational courses and training resources in Oregon, as well as to the Internet and the World Wide Web.

Oregon - Oregon State System of Higher Education (OSSHE)
Expanding distance learning opportunities is a key strategy for OSSHE's realization its vision of a restructured higher education system. This vision increases access to students throughout the state and uses technology to enhance both faculty and student productivity. This site is Oregon's current work in this area.

Utah - The Utah Education Network
The Utah Education Network is a set of broadcast, two-way video, and data networks that comprise one of the most complete educational technology resources to be found in any state. This is a great site, though you may wish to turn off your graphics to speed it up. It has information on Utah EdNet; KULC, the learning channel; and the Utah Link data network, and also good information on UEN's plans, policies, and procedures.
